Summary
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) revealed its preliminary dispute resolution statistics for 2024. The ICC has significantly improved regarding total value of the claims pending compared to previous years. The full 2024 ICC Dispute Resolution Statistics report will be released later this year.
Caseload Overview
In 2024, ICC reached a caseload that is equivalent to the average caseload of the last five years with 831 new cases filed under the ICC Arbitration Rules and 10 cases under the ICC Appointing Authority Rules.
Participation & Jurisdictions
Within the 2,392 parties participated in ICC Arbitration in 2024, the parties were originated from 136 jurisdictions leading United States with 167 parties, Brazil 156 parties and Spain 137 parties for the new cases. Regarding place of arbitration, 107 different cities selected across 62 countries. The top three are: the UK (96 cases), France, and Switzerland.
Total Dispute Value
ICC broke its all-time record with a total of US$354 billion in dispute for pending cases. Claudia Salomon, President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration states that: “The 2024 statistics underscore the ICC Court’s role as the leading arbitral institution. With so many parties from jurisdictions around the world and a record value of pending cases, it is clear that arbitration remains a vital tool for resolving domestic and cross-border disputes. As we move forward, we continue to prioritise accessibility, efficiency and innovation, ensuring that ICC remains a trusted and effective solution for businesses and States worldwide”.
Alternative Dispute Resolution
Also, a total of 61 requests were filed with the ICC ADR Centre in 2024,
- 37 under the ICC Mediation Rules,
- 20 under the Expert Rules and
- 3 under DOCDEX Rules and
- 1 under the Dispute Board Rules.
Türkiye’s Growing Role
From previous years, Türkiye's preference for ICC arbitration has shown a steady increase, reflecting its growing engagement with international dispute resolution. In 2023, Türkiye ranked 11th globally, with 56 parties involved in ICC arbitrations, demonstrating an upward trend compared to previous years. By 2024, this number had risen significantly to 80, positioning Türkiye as the 8th most represented country in ICC arbitrations. This consistent rise highlights the confidence of Turkish businesses and legal practitioners in ICC arbitration as a reliable and effective mechanism for resolving cross-border disputes. Additionally, Türkiye has frequently been selected as the seat of arbitration in multiple cases, reinforcing its role as a key player in international arbitration within the region.
