Serra Coral is the Managing Partner of Deriş Attorney-At-Law Partnership.

She has implemented a number of progressive litigious strategies that have significantly advanced IP practices in Turkey. After qualifying, Ms. Coral was involved with the introduction of new decree laws and the filing of trademark oppositions, as well as the establishment and representation of Patent Cooperation Treaty applications in Turkey.

Fluent in French and English, Ms. Coral is regarded as an international and local expert in the establishment of industrial and IP rights for companies. She also has significant experience in the granting and tracking of licenses. An active litigator in numerous fields, including information technology, media, advertising, competition, and telecoms, Ms. Coral advises renowned brands in the food and beverages, consumer, and luxury goods sectors. In addition to providing counsel on protection, enforcement, and anti-counterfeiting strategies, Ms. Coral has been recognised for her expertise in filing strategies, genericness, and litigation. She is leading an international patent, trademark, and design filing team and focusing on foreign litigation and enforcement matters in partnership with Swiss firm Sedin.

With the growth of the team and litigation practice, she is more focused on management and responsible for HR and global benchmarks and compliance. Beyond professional achievements, she is involved in the establishment of Deriş’ corporate infrastructure and put it into practice with the ‘balanced scorecard’ strategy.

The highlights of Ms. Coral’s career to date include:

  • - contributing to a landmark court decision regarding unfair competition and trademark protection, which was published in INTA’s Annual Review;
  • - leading notable consumer brand cases for anti-counterfeiting and customs representation with multi-jurisdictional conflicts associated with trademarks and patents;
  • - supporting a highly publicised programme to raise awareness of image rights in media and entertainment law;
  • - implementing a balanced scorecard system, integrating client satisfaction with process and productivity;
  • - compliance with global benchmarks and standards such as ISO 27001 project for security management and ISO 17100 for translation quality, Great Place to work, United Nations Global Compact; and
  • - implementation of effective performance management system and career planning and talent development.

Patent Enforcement at the Borders

Turkey, positioned strategically between Europe and Asia with a population of 82 million and a larger youth population than any EU member state, aims to strengthen its export platform by focusing on high-tech patents. However, Turkey has a counterfeiting problem with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the EUIPO study Mapping the Real Routes of Trade in Fake Goods identifying Turkey as a significant source of counterfeit goods. The Industrial Property Code and the Custom Act 4458 provide viable tools for patentees to enforce their patents effectively and successfully. Patentees must record their patents and provide appropriate documentation to Customs to enable effective enforcement.
